Needless to say, India is witnessing phenomenal economic growth. And with various schemes like ‘Make In India’ in the pipeline we are sure to become the global manufacturing and economic hub. This means more employment, more office hours and more hard work.
In fact, according to a report by Dale Carnegie Training, Indian workforce has a considerably higher number of full-time working professionals (46%), as compared to the global average of 34%
But an increase in employment and economic opportunities doesn’t necessarily mean increase and betterment in the working environments or employee health.
Irregular and often long working hours, round the clock shifts, high work targets, constant pressure, etc. result in employees adopting sedentary lifestyles both on and off work, indulging in unhealthy food habits and high levels of mental stress.
The underline here is to realize that productivity and health are interrelated and interdependent.
With the corporate timer looming over our heads, hectic schedules, a largely lethargic lifestyle and little attention to our health, we are bound to be prone to numerous health risks like heart diseases, stroke, cancer, neck aches, backaches, obesity and other chronic disorders. Without proper care, these pose potentially huge risks to health and even life.
The underline here is to realize that productivity and health are interrelated and interdependent. Ensuring good health and engagement of the workforce needs to find a place as one of the organization’s key goals. Organizations can achieve all this and create a culture of wellness as opposed to directionless work churning through a well-defined and well-executed corporate wellness program.
The question here being, are the conventional workplace wellness programs really effective?

A study by People Matters published in 2019 pointed out that on a scale of one to five, Indian organizations rated their contentment with current wellness programs at three.
Another survey, Cigna’s 360 well-being revealed that 87% of people think that workplace wellness programs need to better address their specific needs. The survey also mentions that there is a gap between employers’ workplace wellness programs and workers’ needs.
Furthermore, 45% agree that wellness programs focus more on physical rather than mental well-being and tend to be one size fits all when in fact, they need to be tailored specifically to their target staff.
It is evident that most of the companies offer wellness activities that are not personalized or unique, resulting in less employee dissatisfaction and low recovery rates.
Keeping in mind the very stressful and fast-paced corporate culture, a much more systematic and comprehensive way of addressing health is required.
