Digital Detoxing in the Corporate World: Need of the hour?

In today’s times, we are inhabiting a digital jungle. Our lives are surrounded by screens, be it your smartwatch tracking health, laptops to make your presentations, that big screen tablet to binge on Netflix, or your most prized possession - the smartphone.

Especially in our workplaces, where burying your face in screens and tapping your fingers is seen as a sign of productivity, the need for digital detoxing is pertinent.

Digital Detox: Disconnect to connect

Digital detox as the name suggests is a practice of giving up the use of digital devices and gadgets for a certain amount of time. We can implement digital detox by taking a break from the various social media platforms, our mobile phones, laptops, and all the other electronic gadgets.

And even though this may seem easier said than done because we have never been more surrounded by technology, we also can’t deny the findings of multiple surveys and trials. It has been observed that taking a break from the digital world even if for a short time has positive results. Digital Detox can make you healthier, less anxious and more involved in the world around us.

Why Digital Detox

Taking a break, ignoring distractions, and living without screens or constant beeps of notifications are all difficult in today’s world. The corporate culture thrives on technology and doesn’t give us the luxury of letting go of our smartphones.

The average person spends most of his work hours in front of a screen which amounts to over 45 hours a week. And while technology sure is a very important aspect of our workplace, we also can’t ignore the fact that it is now dangerously dominating and controlling our lives.

Excess screen time and addiction to technology pose numerous ill effects. Not just physically but mentally too.

Here are some reasons to encourage you to stash all your devices away and go for a digital detox.

1. Technology is making us lethargic

In today’s age, most of our jobs include spending hours sitting in front of our desks in offices. This is making us increasingly lazy and sedentary, which in turn increases our chances of becoming overweight and makes us prone to various health issues.

It is evident that technology has replaced healthier alternatives. For example, in our offices instead of getting up and walking to other persons’ desks, we prefer to mail them. We refuse to even cover a distance of a few footsteps and then wonder why we can’t climb up a flight of stairs without losing our breaths.

Technology has made our life too easy. So easy, that it has made us physically weak.

2. Too much screen time is linked to stress and anxiety

Numerous studies have showcased that prolonged use of technology, especially social media, has resulted in an increased level of depression and stress in the users. Excessive usage of social media leads to a sharp decline in our life satisfaction levels. Comparing our lives on the virtual medium makes us more stressed and discontent. This takes a toll on our performance levels in the workplace.

3. Disrupted sleep cycles

The National Sleep Foundation has stated that excessive use of electronic devices especially during the night adversely affects our sleep cycles.

The body’s production of Melatonin (sleep hormone) is hampered by the blue light emitted from the devices, which in turn makes us stay awake longer, making us susceptible to grave problems like insomnia. This in turn reduces our efficiency at work, hampering our progress in the fast-paced corporate world.

4. Hinders creativity

Achieving at work requires us to be at our creative best and have a quick-thinking capacity. Being able to come up with new ideas and plans increases productivity at our workplace. Over-dependence on technology is not only stagnating our mental progress but is also killing active imagination in the workforce.

Technology was once seen as a solution to all our problems. But our excessive reliance on the virtual world is turning most of us into technology addicts, especially the working class. While we can’t just remove all the devices from our lives, we can very well manage their usage and control our dependency on them.
